Some fans keep refering the old g1 facial skin as "liquid metal", others as "magical" flexible plates to explain how it works. I don't really agree with this. I am not exactly a fan of the hinged ventriloquist dummy mouth either, but I reckon this design works though for IDW Arcee (as she became an experiment) , "zombified" Cyclonus and Headmaster Sunstreaker (his head has been chopped to pieces). Limiting a complex living alien machine to understandable and visible earth devices or machine parts seems...uh... limiting.
Why not just include springs, bolts, screws and AA batteries with 'em to complete everything?
I prefer to look at organic alien robots not as Gundams or Macrosses (with earthly, man-made identifiable parts) but with more intricate and sometimes micro/nanoscopic cybernetc alien elements. Why not this explaination for the mouth and facial skin? Intricate segments coated by a cybertronic "skin" or simply an alien paint coat (microsopic filaments joining together as epidermis)

Why just the face? Evolution? The designer wants it that way? It takes from Primus' image? Coat for sensitive sensors on the head? Maybe it's not that durable as the body armour? Perhaps for the primary purpose of showing emotion...

Heck, if we take everything seriously every robot should just look like Shockwave.

The human face similarities also brings various theories to consideration in science fiction, such as universal convergent evolution and design, existence of other humanoid alien species, and maybe the existence of God (and other gods).

Anyway, enough of this rubbish. This pic is just my interpretation.

Due, you're my hero! That's EXACTLY the way I perceive TFs facial features.  Not as exaggerated as Bay's shapeless faces, nor like animated's or TF prime's... nor I ever liked the description of "liquid metal" (A thing I have to swallow up frequently in slash, though, as sometimes they describe mechs as having... "soft lips"... Ok, I love slash but that makes me go "WTH?" all the time XD)

Glad to see someone making such a logical explanation, if short. ^^ This goes to my favs!

Great pic & thoughts, esp. the nanotech idea. I personally don't think it unrealistic that TF would have humanoid form - the human form is pretty darn rational and complex; we can't even fully replicate the complete mechanics/balance of biped motion, so it hardly makes sense that an advanced alien mech lifeform couldn't put together a face more sophisticated than would a kid with a toolbox.

As one who spends way too much time thinking about and analyzing such things, I thought this image, and your comments, were very insightful. Thanks.:)
